Choosing an "Actima" Clamping Device

The Actima clamping device is self-locking and designed for smooth, precise clamping that is both repeatable and very forceful. It can be used for thrust or tension clamping, and is ideal to build into clamping fixtures, such as a teeter-totter.

With Transverse Axis or With Through Hole

The version with transverse axis features a pin crossing the central bore of the thrust plunger. The pin can be used as a connecting point for a tension clamping linkage, or it can be used to support a small diameter shaft for thrust clamping.

The through hole version features a central bore that is completely open and unobstructed. This is the simplest version, often chosen for thrust clamping.

Thrust or Pull Clamping

The clamping plunger of every Actima clamp as a travel of 12 mm. For 10 mm of that travel, movement is quick and free. During the final 2 mm of travel, movement is dramatically slower and the clamp becomes self-locking. The location of 2 mm self-locking phase determines whether the Actima is ideal for thrust or tension clamping.

In the thrust clamping version, the plunger rises quickly out of the clamp body and slows at the end of its travel. The 2 mm of slow, self-locking travel is highlighted in red in the drawing.

The pull version is designed for tension clamping. The plunger starts fully extended, and falls rapidly into the body of the clamp. The 2 mm zone of slow, self-locking travel occurs close to the body of the clamp, just before it is fully retracted.

Left or Right Handed

The Actima is left handed if normal operation occurs when the handle is on the left hand side and moved away from the user:

  • For a thrust model, that means the plunger will start inside the body and rise as the handle is pushed away from the user
  • For a pull model, that means the plunger will start fully extended, and retract into the body as the handle is pushed away from the user

The Actima is right handed if normal operation occurs when the handle is on the right hand side and moved away from the user:

  • For a thrust model, that means the plunger will start inside the body and rise as the handle is pushed away from the user
  • For a pull model, that means the plunger will start fully extended, and retract into the body as the handle is pushed away from the user
